A popular feature in Good Times magazine is the Poetry page, where we showcase works written and submitted by our readers. Janille Abbott’s “Motherhood” appeared in the December issue.
Motherhood
An extension of me
Lying there so peaceful
Picture of innocence
Sweet joy in the morning
The miracle of creation
In one tiny form
Such perfection realized
We made you and bear you
Fear steps in with gradual steps
Enfolding my heart in
A viselike grip of
Remembered thoughts of
Growth, pain, and what could be
Your sole protector in a
World gone mad with
Adverse lusts of body and mind
Such sorrow for I can’t be
With you to protect continuously
All I can do is give to
You weapons of defence
And a faith in greater
To guard you in moments
Of hardships yet to come
My little one
I ache for what you
Must go through to
Grow up strong in ways
Unknown as of yet
How I wish to take your
Pain upon me but I can’t
And in this fact lies
The realization that it’s yours
Yours to learn from, grow from
