Foods that are good for the health of your gut and heart may also be a boon for your brain.
Using dietary survey data from a long-term study on lifestyle-based disease, Japanese researchers calculated dietary fibre intake for each of 3,729 people. Participants were aged 40 to 64 when they filled out questionnaires between 1984 and 1999.
Over approximately 20 years of follow-up, 670 of these people developed dementia disabling enough to require care. The incidence of dementia was 25 per cent lower among those who ate the largest amounts of fibre than among those who consumed the least.
