Good Idea or No-No? An expert addresses a concern about what is and isn’t advisable

Should You Shave Your Dog Before It Gets Hot Outside?
Bad idea! Unlike humans, dogs don’t release heat by sweating through their skin but by panting and by sweating through their paw pads, which means that shaving them doesn’t help them beat the heat. In fact, their fur helps to protect them from high temperatures. “The hair creates a layer of thermal insulation,” explains veterinarian Éliane Marquis. “In winter, it protects them from the cold, and in summer, it holds a bit of cool air. If you brush the coat regularly to remove dead hair and tangles, air can circulate better between the hairs and cool your pet. The hair also protects them from sunburn.”
On the other hand, giving your dog a good trim makes sense in certain circumstances. “Some dog breeds, especially golden retrievers, are more prone to skin infections caused by humidity,” she notes.
“In that case, a good clipping before summer may be recommended. Also make sure to dry your pet’s skin folds and ears well after bathing them to prevent dermatitis and swimmer’s ear.”
