New National Poison Control Number

By Wendy Haaf

If you have young grandchildren who visit, you might want to post this number near your phone: 1-844-POISON-X (1-844-764-7669).

Children, especially those under the age of six, are the group most likely to ingest potential poisons, from over-the-counter medications, vitamins, and cleaners to plants, personal-care products (such as mouthwash), alcohol, and cannabis.

Launched by Health Canada, the new number will connect callers with their nearest poison control centre for expert medical advice. More than 1,500 people in Canada die each year from unintentional poisoning, making it a leading cause of preventable injury and death.
