With vinyl records cool again, independent record stores are popping up everywhere. Saturday, April 22, is the 10th anniversary of Record Store Day, when these indie stores host special events and artists put out limited release recordings to celebrate.
For this Record Store Day, Elton John has been named the first worldwide Record Store Day Legend. In response, he’s releasing a special-edition extended version of his first—and favourite—live album, 17-11-70.
John’s won’t be the only exclusive release happening. Beatles fans will love the limited edition 7-inch single of “Strawberry Fields” and “Penny Lane,” originally released as a double A-side in 1967. There’s also a special David Bowie box set, a live album from The Doors, and many other records available only through participating record stores on a first-come, first-served basis.
Record Store Day events are always fun and a great excuse to head out and pick up some new vinyl, or to rifle through the racks and reminisce about the LPs you once had. In addition to the freebies that are often to be had, drinks and snacks add to the party atmosphere. Your local record store may even have a band or two playing.
If you’re hoping to grab one of the special Record Store Day releases, remember that the earlier you get there, the better: there are limited quantities available, and they sell out fast.
