Advertorial – Summer is the perfect time to visit Scandinavia, when the temperate days feel endless thanks to the glorious Midnight Sun. This region of Northern Europe is known for its Viking heritage, dramatic scenery, and historical yet contemporary cities. With its natural beauty and high quality of life, it’s no wonder the world’s top three happiest countries are all Scandinavian. Join Craig Travel’s Legends of Scandinavia adventure, as we explore the best this region has to offer by road, rail and sea.
We begin our journey in Norway, travelling through the country with stops in Bergen, Flam, Geilo and Oslo along the way. In Bergen we stroll along the old wharfs and through open-air fish markets, enjoy a ride in the funicular to the top of Mount Fløyen, and take in the medieval architecture of the Fantoft Stave Church. After a quick ferry ride from Bergen to Flam, we will enjoy Norway’s breathtaking landscape of waterfalls and rocky cliffs by rail with the Flåmsbana, which has been described as one of the most beautiful train journeys in the world. Upon arrival in the capital city of Oslo, the day will be spent absorbing Norway’s culture through visits to several significant museums.
Have you heard of “Hygge” before? It’s the Danish lifestyle trend that’s sweeping North America and translates to a mood of coziness, comfort and contentment. Our time in Denmark aims to fulfill this mood with our guests, as we take a leisurely pace to fully appreciate the offerings of this once Viking fishing village turned nation’s capital. Highlights include visiting two different 17th century castles, a canal cruise through the city’s harbour, and plenty of free time to explore before moving on to Stockholm.
Sweden is well-known for its design (hello, IKEA!) and our visit to Stockholm is steeped in appreciating Scandinavian art and architecture. We’ll visit the Vasa Museum, City Hall, and Drottningholm Palace while our free time allows us to take in the city’s more contemporary architecture at our own pace. In an effort to balance the human-made with nature, we say farewell to Sweden with a scenic cruise through the Stockholm archipelago which features well over 1,000 islands. After an overnight ferry to Helsinki, our final day will be spent exploring the sights and sounds of Finland’s capital, completing our cultural discovery of these vibrant Nordic cities.
Scandinavia’s natural beauty, rich culture and stunning architecture are not to be missed, and summer is the perfect time to experience some Nordic charm.
